It was very Christmassy outside as Heather Noel and I recorded our final DVD Afternoon podcast of 2010, but the content of the films we discussed couldn't have been more inappropriate to the holidays, unless you associate sociopathic bankrobbers and unhygienic German restaurants with the Yuletide season. Up for debate: the two-part, four-hour criminal biopic Mesrine, starring the magnetic Vincent Cassel as Jacques Mesrine, the most notorious outlaw (and most shameless publicity hound) in France during the ’60s and ’70s; and Fatih Akin's amiably scruffy workplace comedy-drama Soul Kitchen. Along the way, we discuss this year's Golden Globe nominations, Heather gives her mini-review of Krzysztof Kieslowski's The Double Life of Véronique (and repeatedly shows off her fetching French accent), and we both decide that every movie could be improved by a five-second Udo Kier cameo.We'll be taking next week off from the podcast to enjoy Christmas with our families, but don't worry: we'll be back with all-new episodes in 2011—we're especially looking forward to our January 3 show, in which we'll reveal our picks for the year's best films as well as our favourite DVD discoveries of 2010.
