We're in the middle of a pretty bad dry spell for interesting new DVD releases (or even uninteresting new DVD releases), and so Heather Noel and I will be spending the next couple of episodes of the DVD Afternoon podcast deep in Criterion country. This week, we take a look at Ken Loach's 1969 working-class falconry drama Kes and Brian De Palma's 1981 thriller Blow Out, both of which have gotten fresh new Criterion reissues, and both of which we think are eminently worthy of the Criterion treatment. (De Palma's red-white-and-blue Blow Out colour scheme looks especially snazzy on the Blu-Ray.)Even though it's a shorter-than-usual episode, though, we still found time to cram in a mini-review of one of the longest movies we've ever talked about on the show, Chantal Akerman's brilliant 1977 feminist endurance test Jeanne Dielman: 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles. (Delphine Seyrig really should have been given her own cooking show—every week, she could peel potatoes and look numbly past the camera for half an hour.) Plus, Heather and I offer our joint list of the week's other most noteworthy new DVD and Blu-Ray releases. We got the whole thing done in less than an hour this week... yay, brevity!
Here's how the show breaks down:
0:00: Intro/Pacific Northwest movies/Jeanne Dielman/Kes
21:40: Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, "Shake a Tail Feather"
22:44: Blow Out
41:46: Pino Donaggio, "Sally and Jack"
42:37: Other noteworthy new DVDs and Blu-Rays/Outro
